Managing Challenges in Infrastructure Projects

Cost fluctuations, long material lead times, and unexpected delays are common in the infrastructure industry. For example, significant cost changes in pipe material, trucking costs, and commodities such as aggregates and concrete have created budget challenges that we must carefully manage for our customers. Our team’s proactive planning secures materials early to meet deadlines. In one project, we encountered significant challenges while setting a large stormwater pump station for G.E. in Bucyrus, Ohio. The depth of excavation reached 28 feet, and we had to use a double-stacked trenching and shoring system with extensions to an 18’ width. Groundwater seepage and methane gas detection at the final depth required additional precautions and site adjustments. The project occurred during significant rainfall that regularly altered the excavation and required securing of an existing manhole in the process.

We’re equipped to handle difficult conditions, whether it’s groundwater issues, poor soils, weather, environmental concerns, or other unforeseen challenges. For instance, during a sanitary lift station project for the City of Ashland, we had to bypass pump the existing sanitary system, dewater the excavation, and manage poor soil conditions at depths of 28 to 30 feet. With triple-stacked trench boxes, securing a gas main, and a fiber optic line, the project demanded intricate coordination and careful planning. On any of these projects, one of the most challenging obstacles can be safely removing the shoring while working around the newly installed structures. Our adaptability, pre-planning, and most importantly the crew members’ experience on multiple projects help us navigate these complex issues and keep projects on track.

Effective Project Management & Communication

Clear communication and coordination are crucial. From the first phase to completion, we work closely with engineers, architects, contractors, government bodies, and our subcontractors and suppliers to ensure smooth collaboration. Strong and clear communication between the project manager, field superintendent, and the crew on-site is key to keeping everyone aligned. Regular meetings help maintain alignment on goals and timelines, while our project managers and superintendents handle daily operations to ensure things stay on track. Customer pre-planning plays a major role in every project, but staying responsive to changes, challenges, and unforeseen conditions is essential to completing projects on time and within budget. This proactive communication and adaptability not only help manage timelines but also foster strong relationships built on trust with our clients. Anticipating challenges and managing timelines are at the heart of our approach, and we’re always prepared with contingency plans to stay on schedule, even when disruptions occur.
